The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders opened August 27, 2007 at the site of former Porter Middle School in Austin. The school, while part of the Austin Independent School District, is augmented with private funding from the Foundation for the Education of Young Women and depends on the support of individuals, foundations, and corporations to provide enhanced academic, extracurricular, college preparatory and leadership development programs for its students. Principal, Jeanne Goka, has staffed the school staff and built the curriculum.
The school opened with 230 students split evenly between grades 6 and 7, and will add a grade each year until the first graduating class in 2013. The school will have 805 students when all grades are filled. Students from economically disadvantaged families are given priority in admissions.
